Accomplishments
The Center's
efforts to improve survey research methods have resulted in
significant landmark accomplishments. As of 1970, the SESRC
was the first university-based telephone survey laboratory
in the western United States. In 1978, Don
A. Dillman, Deputy Director for Research and Development
of the SESRC, published the first book (Mail and Telephone
Surveys: The Total Design
Method) describing the step-by-step procedures for conducting
the highest quality mail and telephone surveys. The Center
also developed one of the first Microcomputer-Assisted Telephone
Interviewing (MATI) systems in the United States in 1984.
Since 1989, the SESRC has continually worked toward improving
response rates, cognitive questions design, and mixed mode
surveys.
