All telephone
interviewers at SESRC receive at least 8 hours of training
in proper interviewing techniques before they proceed with
actual telephone interviews. Additionally, all interviewers
receive approximately four hours of specific training on each
new survey.
Five
percent of telephone interviews are monitored by supervisory
personnel, who are able to listen to interviews on the telephone
and view on a computer screen as they are being conducted.
The monitoring process focuses on the interviewer's use of
probing and feedback phrases, accuracy in reading questions
and recording responses, rapport with respondents, and ability
to persuade respondents to complete the interview. Immediate
feedback is given to each interviewer who is monitored.
Data
Validation Steps:
Three
separate validation steps are utilized or survey projects
conducted by SESRC. The first data validation step occurs
by the computer software used for conducting telephone interviews.
The second occurs at the data management step. And, the third
occurs during data analysis.
