The Latest Survey Research Methods

The SESRC at Washington State University has been a leader in developing survey research methods for over 35 years. Our research center began in 1970 with the simple goal of providing our university with timely feedback concerning the opinions of students and faculty, but quickly grew into an internationally recognized organization responsible for exploring and developing cutting-edge survey methods.

The SESRC's Public Opinion Lab was one of the first university-based telephone research laboratories in the country and has grown to a 60-station interviewing facility where our research staff continue to develop and publish new methods in telephone survey interviewing techniques and sampling methods.

The SESRC's world-reknown survey methodologist, Dr. Don A. Dillman, published "Mail and Telephone Surveys: The Total Design Method" in 1978 - a book recognized in 1990 by the Institute for Scientific Information as a "Citation Classic.," It has been cited in more than 3,600 scientific publications. Today, Dr. Dillman is preparing the fourth edition of his textbook on survey methods and continues his research with visual design methods in both print and Internet surveys.

The director of the SESRC, Dr. John Tarnai, is an internationally recognized survey methodologist with 30 years of publsihed research. Dr. Tarnai's latest series of papers on interviewer productivity has appeared in publications by the American Statistical Association, the "Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods" P. J. Lavrakas (Ed.), and presented at the the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the International Field Directors & Technologies Conference (IFDTC).

Dr. Danna Moore, the center's Associate Director, is a leader in developing methods and strategies for conducting establishment surveys. Her methods research, as well as her work in agricultural economics surveys have appeared in numerous publications.
